This One Skill Can Help Your Pup!

Picture this: you're out and about with your furry friend, exploring new places and enjoying the great outdoors. But instead of frolicking and having a grand old time, your dog is bouncing off the walls, unable to sit still. Sound familiar? If so, it's time to teach your pup the art of settling and relaxing in different environments.

Why is it important?

Teaching your dog to settle is not just about preventing them from turning into a canine tornado. It's also about their mental and emotional well-being. Just like humans, dogs need downtime to recharge and de-stress. By teaching them to settle, you're giving them the tools to cope with new and potentially overwhelming situations.

How to train a dog to settle

Training your dog to settle may sound like a daunting task, but fear not! With a little patience and some tasty treats, you'll have your pup chilling out in no time. Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started:

Step 1: Choose a designated settle spot

Start small and in an environment they are comfortable in. It could be a cozy corner, a comfy dog bed, or even a special settle mat ( like the one we offer, but more on that later!) Make sure it's a quiet area where your dog can relax without distractions.

Step 2: Capture the calm

Whenever you catch your dog in a calm and relaxed state, reward them with a treat and praise. This could be when they're lying down quietly or simply chilling out on their own. The key is to reinforce the behavior you want to see more of. You can use a clicker or a marker word like yes to indicate to your pup they are doing a bang up job

Step 3: Add a cue

Once your dog starts associating the settle spot with relaxation, it's time to add a cue. Choose a word or phrase like "settle" or "relax" and say it calmly and gently when your dog is in the settle spot. Eventually, they'll start to understand that the cue means it's time to chill. Remember to keep using your marking word or clicker for clear communication!

Step 4: Gradually increase distractions

Now that your dog has mastered settling in a quiet environment, it's time to up the ante. Start introducing mild distractions, like a TV playing softly or someone walking by. If your dog gets up or becomes restless, calmly guide them back to the settle spot and reinforce the cue.

Step 5: Take it on the road

Once your dog is a settling pro at home, it's time to practice in different environments. Take them to a park, a café, or even a bustling city street. Start with less stimulating places and gradually work your way up. Remember to be patient and give them plenty of rewards and praise for their efforts.

But that's not all! Our settle mat also features a non-slip bottom, ensuring it stays in place even during the most enthusiastic settling sessions. And with its stylish design and vibrant colors, it's a mat that both you and your dog will love.

So, if you're ready to transform your dog from a perpetual motion machine to a zen master, it's time to invest in a settle mat. Your pup will thank you, and you'll finally be able to enjoy some well-deserved peace and quiet.
